About Me

A self portrait of The Canna Artist

Hello there, I’m Allison, also known as The Canna Artist

I am an independent illustrator and designer serving the cannabis industry in particular! I feel it is my purpose to help de-stigmatize this plant in the way I know best – through my art, and by creating colorful, engaging, educational work that causes one to pause and consider the good cannabis can(/does) do.

How The Canna Artist began

I got my Ohio medical cannabis card in January of 2019. After traveling more than 3 hours each way to make my first dispensary purchase in Ohio, I knew immediately that this plant was changing my life. I just wasn’t aware how much it was then. By September of 2019, I had begun creating artworks with the theme of advocacy and de-stigmatization and posting them to Instagram under the moniker @thecannaartist.

Cannabis Legalization

Although medical cannabis was made legal in Ohio in 2016, medical sales did not begin until early 2019. Cannabis remains federally illegal in the United States, however, and this plant is still considered a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act. This means that while I may be lucky enough to treat my qualifying conditions with medical cannabis, not everyone in Ohio and the greater United States is able to, and I don’t think that’s fair. I fully believe that every person who chooses to medicate with cannabis should be allowed to do so at their will.

The fact of the matter remains that it is a plant that has never caused an “overdose;” not to mention the fact that every human being contains a entire system of the body dedicated to breaking down and making use of the chemical compounds in the plant. Additionally, more than 40,000 people in the United States are incarcerated due to cannabis-related charges. I don’t think it’s fair either that any one of those people doesn’t get to spend holidays, birthdays, and other milestones, both significant and ordinary with their loved ones. They are another reason I advocate for full cannabis legalization.
